The MidAtlantic Cardiovascular Foundation has designed a pilot program to address the issue of childhood obesity.  “Steps to Success” is a 12 week after-school program that provides 90 minutes of exercise, dietary education, fitness education, and psychosocial counseling three days a week.  The first program was held at Pikesville Middle School.  Twenty children were enrolled in the program, which was funded by the Foundation.

“Steps to Success” Childhood Obesity Program

Text Box: Did you know?
The prevalence of childhood obesity tripled between 1980 and 2000. Adverse outcomes in childhood obesity include diabetes, bone & muscle disorders, elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart blockages (atherosclerosis), depression, and poor quality of life.

There are five guiding principles important for the treatment of childhood obesity:
Establish personalized treatment goals based on age, degree of overweight and other medical conditions;
Involve the family in the treatment plan;
Provide frequent monitoring;
Incorporate behavioral, psychological, and social principles into the treatment plan; and
Provide recommendations for dietary and exercise changes that can be implemented within the family environment.
